I wrote Ego in a writing session with Dan Henig and Linden Jay who both worked with me on Cherry Wine.  I think this is their first times being involved in an NFT so I'm stoked that I can help bring some fellow creators into the web 3.0 space with me on this journey. 

I hope that I'm going to extend my collector-base with this release and welcome more NFT collectors into my community.  I'm about to be doing lots of touring all over the place and so I'm hoping that I'll be able to connect with collectors in different cities around the world, that would be so cool.

ISLA REMIX #7

Bela - 
A trip with friends will always be revealing. This song was born while I was on San Andrés island which is an island off the coast of Colombia known for its deep blue waters, warm weather and rich musical culture. This trip was about an escape, to get away from my thoughts and the people who appeared along the way made this trip something wonderful.

Xcelencia - 
I first learned about Bela promoting on Twitter which lead me to her OpenSea. As I went through her collection I noticed the versatility and knew right away she was a songwriter at heart. That definitely drew my attention since I worked on the publishing side of music for several years helping writers and producers. I collected one of the songs in the collection making it the first music NFT I purchased to support other Latin artists in the space.

We were talking about collaborating for some time and ISLA was the perfect song to start with. The Afrobeats inspired soundscape and the Rhodes driven chord progression set the tone for the song. This is one of those records where I effortlessly did my thing inspired by her writing and the production. This is the remix.

the fourth and final song off of the unreleased WITA EP. this song was a turning point for us and a genesis point for the other songs on the EP.
it went through many iterations, but ultimately we are so happy to share this song in its purest form with the world :)

Try to forget it #7

When I started writing songs on bass in 2011 I felt like it gave me some kind of power, I really believe just holding a bass makes you emotionally stronger, you just feel instantly like a badass, the weight of the instrument that you’re holding feels substantial, the depth of the tone, the simplicity in the notes. There’s weirdly so much in that stuff. It’s an incredibly empowering instrument and a useful tool when finding your voice and getting in touch with your feelings. I found a new voice for myself when I started writing on bass, it was writing on bass that led to songs like this. I found it such an important way for me to express myself and lots of the heartache I was going through during my 20s. 

So many songs about bad choices, bad love, bad endings. ‘Try to forget’ feels like the Girl Talk (my 3rd album) era to me. There are still songs from the Girl Talk era coming out of me and still so many locked away in a chamber. It’s a time that was so formative for me, I was dealing with true independence, facing demons, facing bad guys, making bad choices. It felt a bit like Buffy season 5. I felt I was facing the world and was seeing it’s dark underbelly, realising I was an adult but still just a girl underneath. Music has always been the best way for me to deal with my life and this was never more true during this era. I love still being able to access that moment and feeling, it’s youthful, rebellious and angsty, it’s still in my stomach.

‘Try to forget it’ was written in a rehearsal room, there’s a ton of songs written in dingy dark rooms with dirty old amps and microphones, sounds of drums coming through the walls from other bands, cold damp rooms, bad lighting and bad air. I love spending time in these caves and playing for hours, sometimes nothing comes of it but every now and then you catch onto something you’re playing with and it becomes a song, that’s what happened with 'Try to forget it', it was just an afternoon in a rehearsal room jamming on the bass. 

‘Try to forget it’ is a punk love disaster song, written on bass about the car crash you know is coming. In love with someone that doesn’t have respect for you? in love with someone that has hurt you already? You try to forget it, try to make excuses for them and their actions despite knowing better. You make your own bed and you lie in it, you’re aware you should change the sheets, you should probably burn the bed and move house, but you’re not ready. Something is making you stay. Somehow you’re stuck. Only you can choose to walk away. Is it hedonism or self destruction that keeps you entangled? Is it your own sickness, some kind of addiction. I feel like for so many years I put myself in situations and relationships that I couldn’t seem to escape from. I knew they weren’t going to end well “I see you in my rear view mirror” I knew what was coming, yet I’m not sure I was aware I could change anything. So I stayed until the bitter end. This song was written in the middle of those feelings, the midst of my own struggle with personal boundaries, self respect. I clung to my bass as it made me feel powerful and I feel like it helped me release a lot of these thoughts, I just couldn’t quite hear myself. This song feels like a driving song to me, written about toxic love, a car crash you know is coming. You just keep trying and eventually you realise you can walk away, but until then, find a punk love disaster song that brings you some comfort.

Bad Radio #12

My name is felly.  I’m from Connecticut originally but stay out west in Los Angeles. I found a lane in the music scene a few years ago after years of putting out albums/mixtapes/projects on bandcamp, soundcloud- really whatever was available at the time.  We’re talking 5-6 years ago.  During the golden days of indie platforms I hit a chord in a scene I’m still trying to understand. It is wild to think about how things have evolved since.  

In the early days at school at USC in Los Angeles I helped to form a collective called 2273- named after the dorm room my friends and I would create in.  I kept putting out albums/mixtapes and eventually found myself on multiple nation-wide tours as a headline.  Just my friends and I, selling out large rooms all across the United States.

Fast forward a few years and I’m back living in Los Angeles, after making a pit stop in Brooklyn.  I signed to Sony who I dropped a couple projects with, and then most recently signed with 300 Entertainment.   Throughout this journey of creating the art that speaks true to me and my fans, I’ve met and connected with thousands of people across the US and shared this love for music, life, and we’ve all gotten closer to a feeling of oneness.  I’m filled with gratitude to be a creator and be able to play.  The shows are crazy and my team and I get more inspired to create timeless music by the day.  

Bad Radio is the first single off an invisible project I have that is entirely self-produced.  I say invisible because I’m not sure if it will ever come out, though it contains some of the most personal, true to me songs.  There is no reason for why it won’t come out, but the time for it hasn’t come yet.  I’m thankful to Sound XYZ for providing the first glimpse of this album that the public is able to see.  The songs on this EP are folky, dark, driving.  Very different from the sunny light hip hop sound that I’ve been known to come with.  

To sort of spoil it, the idea behind bad radio is a reflection of how I felt about love at the time.  It’s like, when you hear your favorite song on the radio, but the signal won’t quite come in.  Do you stay there in the static, waiting to hear whatever notes you can make out.  Or do you bash the fucking radio and drive off a cliff?  

The choice is yours.

These are the words I want to say when I float away and leave my body behind. 

Time dissipates when I am dancing. My movement encapsulates the interconnectedness of memory, instinct, emotion, and truth. But when the sweat dries and the clocks start up again, my identity can become distorted and blurred. Regret, guilt, fear, and loss flood my mind, ripping me away from the love that colors my life.

This is disassociating for me; I am no longer in control of my body, words, or feelings and I am a shell with empty eyes. My mind hovers and every conversation is empty. My loved ones feel abandoned while we are sitting right across from one another. I wrote these lyrics while fighting a dissociative episode and I managed to come back to myself through making my experience tangible and real with words and sound.

This song is a reclamation of myself. When I’m ready to become real again, patient love is always there to welcome me back home.
